Grades

There are seven grades of membership within the Association:

  • Certified Management Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters CMA
    Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting, completion of CMA units and 5 years relevant experience
  • Associate Management Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters AMA
    Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting and 3 years relevant experience
  • Graduate Management Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters GMA
    Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of the Graduate program
  • Registered Business Accountant- entitled to use the designatory letters RBA
    Degree (Bachelors) in any discipline other than Accounting from a recognised University or 3 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1,2 & 3 of the ICMA’s Graduate program
  • Registered Cost Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters RCA
    Diploma in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or 2 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1 & 2 of the ICMA’s Graduate program
  • Certified Accounting Technician - entitled to use the designatory letters CAT
    Certificate in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or Stage 1 of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stage 1 of the ICMA’s Graduate program
  • Management Accounting Affiliate - entitled to use the designatory letters MAA
    Open Entry for those interested in the field of Management Accountancy

Additionally, there are the following membership grades:

  • Student membership - not entitled to use any designatory letters; and
  • Honorary membership - available for distinguished persons whose services to Management Accounting and related disciplines in the opinion of the Executive Committee merit this award of membership.
  • Fellow – this membership category is by application only for persons who have supported the Institute as a qualified member for a minimum period of 15 years and has demonstrated ongoing professional commitment - entitled to use the designatory letters FCMA.
  • Honorary Fellow this membership category award ed by the Institute for persons of high esteem who have contributed to the development of the profession - entitled to use the designatory letters FCMA without payment of annual membership fees.
  • Management Accountant this is the membership category used for non-finacial members. They are not entitled to use any designatory letters;
  • Life Member- this membership category is by award of the Institute, and for persons of high esteem who have maintained their membership and have contributed to the development and growth of the Institute - entitled to use the designatory letters FCMA without payment of annual membership fees.

Qualifications

Only natural persons who satisfy the Institute's relevant educational requirements (or equivalent) and possess the relevant practical experience are eligible to become Members

Experience

  • For Certified Management Accountant membership - five years approved experience in a senior and responsible business position is required.
  • For Associate Management Accountant membership - three years approved business experience is required.
  • Applicants for Graduate Management Accountant membership must have a minimum education standard of a degree from a university or equivalent educational institution in accountancy or a related discipline. There are no experience requirements.
  • Applicants for Registered Business Accountant membership must have a minimum education standard of a degree in any discipline other than Accounting from a recognised university or 3 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1, 2 & 3 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. There are no experience requirements.
  • Applicants for Registered Cost Accountant membership must have a minimum education standard of Diploma in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or 2 Stages of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1 & 2 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. There are no experience requirements.
  • Applicants for Certified Accounting Technician membership must have a minimum education standard of a Certificate in Accounting from a recognised Technical College (TAFE) or 1 Stage of a Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Stages 1 of the ICMA’s Graduate program. There are no experience requirements.
  • For Management Accounting Affiliate - no management accounting experience is required. It has open entry for those with either 2 years supervisory managerial experience or 3 years of running one's own business. This category of members would be required to undertake an approved continuing professional development (CPD) program within 2-years of being granted such membership. Note that this CPD program can be done anywhere, for example via CMA short courses, CPA Australia seminars or even a university subject in accounting.
  • Applications for student membership must have a minimum education standard of year 12 or equivalent.

Demonstration of Experience

For the purpose of clauses 3.3(a) and 3.3(b) of the constitution, a demonstration of business experience will be required in three main areas :

  • financial and cost accounting skills
  • application of the principles of cost and management accountancy to real management problems; and
  • direct involvement in resource management, decision-making and strategic financial planning.

The experience referred to in clause 3.3(d) must be verified by the applicant's sponsor and will be evaluated by the Membership Committee.

* Relevant experience in management accounting is broadly defined to include the gaining of experience in the provision of information in a wide range of managerial functions including costing, pricing, marketing, strategy, financial analysis, logistics, information systems, etc
