Emeritus Professor Max Aiken

Emeritus Professor Max Aiken has excelled in accounting academia and the accounting profession for over 50 years. He was Professor and Head of School at La Trobe University, Australia; Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand; and the Australian National University (where he was Reader in Accounting and Public Finance). Professor Aiken holds a PhD from the University of NSW and a Master’s degree from Sydney University.

From an academic perspective, he not only delivered and prepared innovative lectures and materials; but also developed future academics through his participation in supervising PhDs; many who have become professors themselves. His own research has made a significant contribution to accounting education and the outcomes of this research has resulted in the publication of 9 texts, articles and reports and 63 articles published in various journals. He has served on many Editorial Boards and was a Founding Member of the British Accounting Review Editorial Board.

Professor Aiken is particularly well known for his work in public sector accounting and auditing; accounting theory and Chinese accounting history. His article ‘Modelling Behavioural Interdependence for Stewardship Reporting’, Accounting Review, July 1975 (with Blackett and Isaacs) was one of the first published in that prestigious journal by an Australian.

From the industry perspective Professor Aiken wrote The General Audit Manual for the Australian Auditor General’s Office and provided Budgetary advice to New Zealand Treasury. He also held a number of important positions in industry including: Head Office Accountant for Toohey’s; Personal Advisor for External Reporting to Sir Gordon Jackson, CEO of CSR Ltd; First Assistant Auditor General Commonwealth Auditor General’s Office; Member, Auditor-General’s Advisory Committee; Chairman, Joint Professional Development Committee, Australian Society of CPAs; Senior Financial Adviser, Joint Parliamentary Committee of Public Accountants, Australia; Member, Public Sector Accounting Standards Committee, New Zealand Society of Accountants.

The Institute of Certified Management Accountants is honoured to induct Emeritus Professor Max Aiken to the Global Accounting Hall of Fame® for his services to academia and the profession in Australia.
